Every Saturday morning a paperboy and his dog get ready to leave their nice warm bed to deliver a newspaper to every house along the route they both know by heart.
Pilkey's Caldecott Honor Book is a visual delight. Quietly, the sky goes from night to dawn to morning as the paperboy rises and rides through the neighborhood attending to his duties. Forest Whitaker narrates with the gentle voice the story merits and gives pause, as each spread unfolds, for the listener to take in the scene and the subtle changes of light and darkness before he interjects the story line. Sound effects such as the snapping of the rubber bands around the newspapers and the barks of his dog offer just enough reality to the delicate scene. Listen in and savor the calm before daylight and the dedication of this young boy and his dog. A.R. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
Lorgnette...
Forest Whitaker is an excellent choice as narrator. The classical mood of the music reflects the beauty of Pilkey's paintings....useful to thematic units on family, jobs, and neighborhoods.
